3D printing

l still want some extra 'meat' on the bore and valve face to machine off
I think David was originally expecting/hoping that a metal 3D printed part wouldn't need machining. From previous comments and the photos I've seen that's very unlikely to be the case.

It's easy as a complete novice in 3D tech to think it's just a case of drawing the part and getting a functioning part made. I think those of us who have actual experience of doing this will know that there's a huge lot more to the process and there are many pitfalls on the way to a basic level of competence.
The two other factors that have barely been mentioned are;
Metal printing to a high standard is hugely expensive.
Designing working live steam models needs a lot of experience in adjusting scale sized parts to a real size that will actually work and perform as you'd expect.

I experimented with welded (steel) fabricated cylinders, but never completed the job - so no results, I'm afraid.

The guy that owned the marina at Grove Ferry was a model engineer, and had a ground level railway in the marina, you can see at least part of it here.

I recall my only visit many years back, amongst many other things he was running a home built traction engine which was all steel, welded boiler, fabricated cylinders, etc.; the main wheels were from an old mini, with 10” tyres. Steel is surely possible. I guess good lubrication is very important.

Quite irrelevant, but somewhere there is a photo of me plus young family, driving John Matthews’ 5” gauge diesel with one hand and raising a glass of bubbly with the other.

I did fit cast iron liners, but they still had steel valve faces (though with cast iron valves...)

The shiny "new" Brighton Atlantic has fabricated cylinders.
You have to go back to 2010 in the Atlantic "blog" to find them..

Anyone interested in the latest 3D metal printing tech could do worse than look at the video linked to below.
The close up at 4:52 shows the surface quality. Not usable as a steam cylinder or slide chest without significant machining to my eye.
