Mickoo's North American Railroad vacations

A mere 12 minutes later this BNSF came storming through at track speed, by far the fastest train of the day and probably close to permitted speed of 75mph, it's something else to see a 12-15,000 ton 2 mile stacker ripping it up at 76 mph.

Interesting graffiti on the container flat.

Another random collection of shots from the day in Gary at Pine Jct.

First up a CN consist rolls down the grade from the cross over and waits for entry into the yard.

The coke express again, some arty (attempted) shots.

Back to the main line and this NS coil train isn't hanging around, not quite as fast as the BNSF stacker yesterday but not far off.

Followed shortly by a CP oil train, the lead hoppers are fracking sand I believe.

RC popped off for essentials, water and hats for me and JB. JB takes the low professional angle, I just loaf around standing up...to be fair by now my knees were playing up and they were to get worse by days end.

IMG_8378.jpg

A short NS local with engine long hood forward.

IMG_8387.jpg

The consist seen at the beginning was broken up and the trailing and middle engines worked back out of the yard with a CN service. There's no mistaking the scenery around here as anything but an industrial scene on steroids, so many angles and vantage points to work. The unit is a GECX demonstrator for the ET44 series, one of only 30 built so quite rare to find; they can be spotted by the long tall engine compartment giving them a distinct humped back appearance.

Working the angles at the bridge as a CN consist crawls out of the yard to make it's train up, it'll set back shortly, wait and then proceed when brake checks are completed.

One of several local Amtrak services blowing through, all were new Chargers except the first (later) which was the older Genesis class, those are mainly on the longer continental runs I think now and probably not long for this world as new Chargers are delivered, these I believe were all local city to city runs.

IMG_8520.jpg

Finally an enormous NS manifest crawls along on the siding (track 3 in my notes), it's consist literally disappearing as far as the eye can see.

There are many stacks of creosoted (?) timber baulks along the cess in the recent shots, they look too short to be sleepers / ties.... What are they for?

Ok, so what size is a typical US tie?
No idea, didn't measure one

Google is your friend, it says 7" x 9" and 8'-6" or 9'-0" long.

Length is probably dependent on track weight, I'd reasonably expect 9'-0" to be used on 141, 147 and certainly 155 lb rail, maybe even as low as 136 lb, below that it'd be reasonable to see 8'-6".

None of my track documents (SP, UP, BNSF) suggest a cross over point between 8'-6" or 9'-0".
