Scenery & Dioramas

Hi Neil

The water is most convincing, both in terms of colour and the lack of meniscus at the edges….

Would I be right in thinking that it’s been done with some sort of sheet material, rather than a poured & cured liquid?

Dan,
You’re absolutely correct regarding the water.
It was produced using an off cut of greenhouse glass painted (aerosols) on the reverse, then laid shiny side up.
Low banks made - such as they are - then all blended into the scenery.
One ‘happy accident’ was reducing the over glossy nature of the glass. I didn’t protect it when using hairspray to add the various top layers of scenery, thinking I’d clean it up at the end. But actually, the slight matting of the surface produced a nice effect of still, claggy water.
Neil.

Hi Neil

Many thanks for your in-depth (no pun intended!), answer.

Hi Dan,

I'd also recommend the acrylic fluids and gells sold by Golden.

The GAC 500 is a runnier fluid that self levels and has no meniscus at the edges. You only need a couple of thin coats for a good water effect.

The soft gell can be placed or stippled to make ripples or waves. Starts white but dries clear.

Both can be mixed with acrylic paints. Only take a few hours to completely set. No nasty chemicals or chance of escape like resins.

Finished effect:

Not something I had used prior to the Crooked House project but definitely would use again...

As ever, more delightful and impeccable work. As a rather ancient modeller who still enjoys creating scenic work, I find your hints and advice on both methods and materials always invaluable. Thank you for your generosity - it really does help me try to improve my humble efforts.

Roger.

Hi Neil,

Having had some / many disasters using resins and varnish etc for water I really wasn't looking forward to doing the canal on Crooked House. A friend tipped me off to a YouTube video by Boomer Dioramas where these products were used, so I took a punt and really pleased. The two tubs were about £35 in total from an art shop but they will last me years as I won't be doing lakes or harbours any time soon...

The layout Bourne End (7mm) - a few pics shown earlier in this thread - has now been featured in the MRJ.
I’ve added a small set of photos, mainly that Barry Norman took for the feature (and has kindly let me use) and a few that I took whilst undertaking the scenery on the layout.

A more recent scenery job I’ve been working on is an O gauge layout called Rosedale (fictional) WIP.
Set in the Derbyshire Dales, its the creation of Keith Newton.
The ‘green stuff’ is my work, assisted by Keith endlessly teasing out Polyfibre and rubberised horse hair for me!
The beautiful stone village and painted backscene, the work of Paul Bambrick.
Stone walls, stone bridge, chapel fence and field gate, Keith.

When creating the 'fictional' Rosedale* are the buildings here based on existing Derbyshire Peak District properties?

Would the same tenet apply to 'fictional, scenes of other locales?

* As soon as I see Rosedale all I can think of is the 1966 Cream song Crossroads (a great live track!) which has the line - Well, I'm going down to Rosedale.

It’s a brilliant piece of music, I presume the lyrics refer to doing a deal with the devil at midnight, but I really can’t make sense of them

Verse 1]
I went down to the crossroads
Fell down on my knees
I went down to the crossroads
Fell down on my knees
Asked the Lord above for mercy
"Save me, if You please!"

[Verse 2]
I went down to the crossroads
Tried to flag a ride
I went down to the crossroads
Tried to flag a ride
Nobody seemed to know me
Everybody passed me by

[Verse 3]
I am going down to Rosedale
Take my rider by my side
I am going down to Rosedale
Take my rider by my side
You can still barrelhouse, baby
On the riverside

[Verse 4]
You can run, you can run
Tell my friend, Poor Lee Brown
You can run, you can run
Tell my friend, Poor Lee Brown
And I am standing at the crossroads
Believe I am sinking down

(Eric Clapton – Crossroads)
