Hi,

Getting ready to spray the loco body made of mostly plastic with brass details. The finished livery will be black above and red below the footplate.

Normally I would use readily available Halfords plastic primer and their satin black then apply decals and finish with Dullcote, none of these react with each other as long as each coat is bone dry and left alone for at least three full days.

However

The cessation of Dullcote, is the first issue, decals is the second.

Should I switch to gloss black to help the decals?
and
What replaces Dullcote?

Having spent a fortnight on the surface preparation to remove all old paint and replacing missing details, I am really anxious not to repeat previous errors.

Irrespective of whether my model are a matt or satin finish I just prepare the areas where I'm going to apply decals with a gloss varnish. Once the decals have set and dried I seal them in with a satin varnish before weathering.

The resulting area where the decals have been applied may appear cleaner but this was the case in reality where only the numbers and any other reporting marks were cleaned.

Photos on Die Bundesbahnzeit may provide something on appearance. Die Bundesbahnzeit - Baureihe 64

This 1964 photo from Br64.de shows the lower cab side and areas where there are letting is cleaner than the rest of the loco.
