Model Railway Journal

I don't understand the obsession with checks in the UK. Pardon, cheques.

You cannot cash, deposit, write, or otherwise use a check in any way here in Holland. I cannot write a check even if I want to, and I cannot cash or deposit one if it is sent to me.

Strange.
Writing cheques (and using cash) is for me all about the freedom of choice, something which is being rapidly eroded.

Thankfully my Post Office sells MRJ, so I can flick through copies before deciding if I want to buy or not.

Here in Tywyn the local newsagents stocks a huge range of railway magazines including MRJ (the nearest Smiffs is a seventy mile round trip away) so their closures won't impact my MRJ consumption. Also if you take a look on ebay about a week after the magazine hits the shelves you'll have the chance to pick up my read but in good condition copy for about half the cover price. I don't really have space to store it and I can treat myself to the occasional s/h goodie with the proceeds.

They're not closing every store.

There is a Smiffs in Sherihngham, though Lord knows why as there are two perfectly good newsagents there – both of which stock the MRJ, as you would expect. I expect this is one branch that will definitely be getting the chop.
