Ballasting was completed a while back. Which meant I could move onto new grass.

I splashed out and bought a WWScenics static grass kit, which has been great fun to use. :)

A new tree! Courtesy of AK Interactive.

Still much to do. The original scenery at first glance was ok, but on closer inspection was a bit faded and dusty. So an update was justified in my opinion.

Mike
I'm very impressed with that tree! I'm assuming it's one from their 1/35 scale range? Do you mind if I ask which type of tree it is?

Hi Ian

It's a 1/35 maple tree.

I've previously used Woodlands Scenics materials attached to a variety of homemade trunks, but I thought this time I'd try something different and less time consuming. I'm definitely impressed with it and have on order some of the AK Interactive bushes to try. Unfortunately I think some of the trees are no longer available.

The leaves appear to be individually punched (paper?) leaves. The leaves I think are still available to buy separately as well as the punches to make your own leaves from scratch.

Rather than buy another tree I thought I'd have a go at making one.

I found some plastic tree trunks which formed the basis. 20250628_105814.jpg

Glued branches of sea foam to the trunk and then went over the joins with some Green Scene paste I found (which I think has just about reached its shelf life).

Some brown paint and then AK Interactive leaves.

I think I'm more or less done with refreshing the scenery. Not much to say other than much new static grass; rubberised horse-hair; Woodlands Scenics; AK Interactive bits and pieces most recently some laser cut ferns.

I need some better light to photograph Findon Junction, but here we are for the moment.

The time has come for me to add a fiddle yard to Findon Junction. The pictures below hopefully illustrate the current state of affairs.

I'd like to have an off-scene feed to the track that runs behind the shed and another for the track that runs through the shed. A third feed for the track that runs in front of the shed would be nice, but not essential.

The fiddle yard (or whatever ends up being built) has to be removable as I need to access my desk for work and model making.

I'm only looking at a single engine 0-4-0 or 0-6-0 plus a couple of wagons. Say 20 inches long?

I'd be very grateful for any ideas. Especially on how to make the fiddle yard detachable.

Thank you
Mike

Maybe a strip bolted across the end horizontally, carrying a hinge. Then an extension board on the hinge which can just be raised up quickly to a vertical position when not in use. Add an extension bracket at the left hand end of your desk to support the board when down. Probably some alignment will needed to join the tracks on the hinge axis.
Most impressed with your craftsmanship in producing a clean, neat finish to it all

I've ordered a couple of Intentio fiddleyard cassettes to experiment with. In the meantime I've applied my high-school carpentry skills to adding a flap to the end of the layout. This will serve 2 x purposes. One to cover the end up when not in use.

And then to hopefully support the cassettes.

Its all a work in in progress/make it up as I go along.

I've resigned myself to running very short trains as it's finally dawned on me that I simply don't have the space for anything much bigger than a loco + 2x wagons or a coach.:)

Hi Mike
I'm sure someone once commented that "a loco + 2x wagons or a coach" constituted a working railway... lovely modelling and very inspirational for us space starved modellers.
Keep posting please....
Cheers Julian

Dare we hope that you might find room for a 2sq ft extension and enter it in the S7 Challenge?
Dave
I have often thought about some sort of scenic extension doubling up as a fiddleyard. But right now I'm just going to focus on getting a very basic fiddleyard up and running.

Even 2 sq ft is too big for me! I'd just about get away with 2ft x 1ft but I doubt this fits the purpose of the S7 Challenge!

I have lots of ideas bubbling around, but I'm happy to just sit back for the moment and watch some wheels go round.

But, never say never!! ;)

All the best
Mike

The Intentio cassettes arrived in the post today. :)

I must say I'm quite impressed in how they go together.

I'll give them a coat of white paint in due course, but right now I need to add some strips of wood to raise them to the correct height. The alignment pegs may get the chop as I dont fancy hacking any more bits out of the layout! Getting power to the cassettes is also under consideration. I was thinking of something like this.

The downside is that they come as expensive sets of pairs and, with cassettes, there’s an awful lot required. You need pairs at the end of every cassette.

My cheap, crude (but working) solution is documented on the S7 website under the Articles menu.

Dave

edited to make more sense - I hope

In reality the cassettes are unlikely to be swapped around that much. I bought them more as an easy way to knock up some extensions to the existing layout.

I go through phases where I lose interest and instead give my G-Scale locomotives a bit of a run. Hence trying to use off the shelf solutions in order to keep my S7 interests going.

Its all still a bit hit and miss at the moment. The final version may well look very different! :)
